  4.     DIED. Dexter Gordon, 67, legendary jazz tenor saxophonist
  5. and bebop innovator whose polished interpretations influenced
  6. generations of musicians; of kidney failure; in Philadelphia.
  7. Born in Los Angeles, Gordon learned the classical disciplines
  8. of music theory and harmony as a teenager. His public career
  9. began in 1940, when he played with Lionel Hampton and later with
  10. Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, Fats
  11. Navarro and Dizzy Gillespie. Convinced that jazz was undervalued
  12. in his own country, Gordon toured Europe in 1962 and stayed on
  13. for 15 years. His performance in the 1986 film 'Round Midnight
  14. won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
